Hello! There are full and busy weeks ahead of us!
FIELD DAY: Field Day is this Friday, March 29th. You can find general information about field day in the Athenian Echo that is sent out weekly. Below is some additional information based on past experiences: 1. Please make sure to apply sunscreen on your child before sending them to school. 2. Be sure to follow the dress code guidelines outlined in the Athenian Echo. http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?m=1121867127686&ca=cb1a061a-b16f-42f0-91e7-b51142b2efec 3. Every child needs a clearly labeled water bottle. 4. Some of the events include water play so your scholar will probably get wet. The lower grades have their field day events in the morning. Please send a plastic bag and a change of clothes in your scholar's back pack so that he/she can change out the wet clothes upon returning to the classroom. 5. Be sure to also send a pair of dry socks and shoes as well. 6. The academic day will continue in the afternoon. 7. Kona Ice will be present during the field day. Each grade level has been assigned a specific time frame when they can purchase a snow cone. Prices are listed in the Athenian Echo. If your child would like to purchase a snow cone please place the money in a plastic zip lock bag and write your child's name on the bag. Students will be responsible for their own money. WILDLIFE WORLD ZOO: We have gotten approval for the first grade field trip to the Wildlife World Zoo. The field trip will take place on Tuesday April 4th. A letter and permission slip is going home in the red homework folders tomorrow, Tuesday, March 26th. The permission slip and money is due this Friday, March 29th. Please contact me through Jupiter if you are interested in volunteering to chaperone for the field trip by Thursday morning, March 28th. Please note - We are only allowed to take 6 chaperones. If more than 6 people are interested, names will be randomly drawn. Volunteers who were not able to attend the field trip last fall will have priority over those who have already volunteered for a field trip. You must have a fingerprint clearance registered at the front office to volunteer for any school event. ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 10 new words each day and review on Thursday. The test on the 30 words will be on Friday. Math - Students will be working on reading at writing numbers up to 120, identifying numbers as tens sand ones (74 = seven tens and 4 ones, 85 = 80 + 5, etc.), identifying the number of hundreds, tens and ones, and estimating. Hello! Wow! 4th quarter! Every year I feel surprised when fourth quarter suddenly pops up. I hope everyone had a nice spring break. I know I feel relaxed and ready for the next few weeks and it seems that the scholars are relaxed and ready as well. There are always a lot of events that take place during the 4th quarter. Be sure to read the Athenian Echo for information about school events.
ACADEMICS: Spalding: Students will learn 10 new words on Monday, 9 new words on Tuesday, and 10 words on Wednesday. The review is on Thursday and the test is on Friday. Math: This week the students will be working on Time - telling time to the hour and half hour. A "friendly notes" page went home in the homework folder today. The review will be on Wednesday and the test will be on Thursday. On Friday we will begin the unit on "Numbers to 120." This is a very extensive unit that will last for several weeks. History: The 13 colonies Literature: Sam the Minuteman Poetry: "Washington" by Nancy Byrd Turner Poetry recitations begin on April 1st. When working on the poem, my suggestion would be to break it up into stanzas. Focus on the first stanza for a couple of days then add the next stanza and so on. UPCOMING DATES: Saturday, March 23 - PSO Goodwill Donation Drive, 10 AM-12 PM Friday, March 29 -K-5 Athenian Field Day Friday, April 5 -Half Day Dismissal at 12 PM: ATE Inservice - No Lunch Served (You may send a healthy snack to school for your child to eat at recess.) - Trivium Spirit Day Have a nice week! AMAZING!
The concepts taught during the 3rd quarter move beyond review and introduction and they do get harder. Students who, for the first semester, said, "This is easy!" get challenged. Others have to work very hard to understand. I know I have said this before, but every day I continue to be amazed by my students as they rise up to meet challenges, as they learn, as they teach me, as that bright light inside them keeps strongly burning. I have seen amazing growth and maturity in every single scholar in my class. I want to tell you all, as you work with your scholar, academics or otherwise, challenges or not, never give up on them. Your children are amazing! LITERACY CELEBRATION: Last week the classroom coordinators sent out volunteer and supply sign-ups for our 3rd quarter literacy celebration this Thursday, March 7th. There are still several spots open for both. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090c4aacac2babf94-3rdquarter https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090c4aacac2babf94-3rdquarter1 ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 10 new words on Tuesday, review on Wednesday and take the spelling test on Thursday. Math - The fraction unit is very short. On Friday students studied the concepts of 1 whole, 2 halves, and 4 fourths (quarters). We reviewed today. The test is tomorrow. The review and friendly notes are going home in the red homework folders. We also made fraction bars which are in large zip bags. They put the in their back-packs. The fraction bars are a lot of fun and make it easy to see how 2 halves make a whole, etc. - We are starting the unit on telling time to the hour and half hour on Wednesday. Literature - "Winnie - the - Pooh" Science - Habitats - A study guide is going home today. On Wednesday we will be reviewing in class. The Habitats test in on Thursday.
