"I can't believe it is the last week of school."
That is the words that I heard all over the school today. It is very difficult to believe that such young children came into the classroom last August and in just a few days they will be leaving the classroom as second graders. A few of the scholars have quietly confided in me that they are excited but very nervous about being second graders and are wanting to come back as first graders next year because they know I like them. I explained to these students that the second grade teachers are going to love them just as much as I do and that I will be right down the hall so they can wave and say hi to me every day next year. That made them feel a bit better. THANK YOU! Thank you so much for making teacher appreciation week so fun. Each day I wondered what the theme would be. I got the impression that many of you gave very specific directions to your child to "make sure you give that to your teacher's right away!" because each morning I would have more then a dozen children lined up by my desk with big grins on their faces. None of them were about to begin unpacking and start the morning routine until their gift was placed in my hands. I love gifts and I love opening things, but it was actually hard to tell who was more excited, me or the children. THANK YOU NOTES: Mrs. Scott wrote little notes of thanks each day. I sent home thank you notes in the red folders today. Mrs. Scott was absent on Friday. Her desk was covered with gifts so her daughter decided to help her. Her daughter gather all of the gifts to bring home. Her daughter also decided to "help" her open and "organize" everything too. As a result many of the Friday gifts that were labeled with who they were from got taken off and discarded. Mrs. Scott asked me to let all of you know that she is doing her best to figure out who gave her what, but wanted to apologize if she accidentally missed anyone. ;-) UPCOMING DATES: Monday, May 22nd - Tuesday, May 23rd - Full days Wednesday, May 24th - Thursday, May 25th - 12:00 dismissal (Thursday the 25th is the last day of school for students.) SNACKS ON THE HALF DAYS: There will be no lunch on Wednesday and Thursday but children may eat a snack during their recess. The recess takes place about mid-morning so there is still another two hours of academic time after the snack recess. I do request that the snack you send be healthy. Those last two days, the students are going to be very squirmy, nervous, and excited as it is so a snack that is full of sugar is not going to be very helpful in getting them through the rest of the morning. Thank you so much for your cooperation. :-) SPALDING: There are 8 words for this week. Monday: social, society, steal, steel, strange, trophy, voices, voice Tuesday: review all 8 words Wednesday: No homework MATH: Monday: Review worksheet Tuesday: Review worksheet Wednesday: No homework GRAMMAR: We have sent home a grammar review sheet covering all of the things we discussed this year. Missing the last days of school also hurts their end of year bonding time with their classmates along with missing any content we are learning. Thank you for your understanding! We have a very busy three weeks planned.
CONCERT TONIGHT: Due to space limitations, the kindergarten and first grade concerts are being held separately. First grade students must arrive at the King of Kings church by 6:00. The concert will begin at 6:30. We will be unable to spend time escorting scholars between rehearsal and the restroom. Please make sure you child had gone before arriving for rehearsal. Details about the concert may be found on the ATE newsletters. NO HOMEWORK: There will be no homework tonight (Monday, May 8th) MATH: We will be finishing up our unit on money this week with a chapter test on Thursday. I have some inquiries as to how to best assist the scholars with money. Money can be challenging but it can also be fun. Here are some games you can play with your child: 1. Put a pile of change on the floor or table and sort the coins. Making sure to identify each coin as it is being sorted. 2. Give your child some coins. Place some snacks on the table with a price on it. Have your child find the correct amount to "pay" for the snack. 3. Give your child some coins. Tell them an amount and have them find the coins that equal that amount. See if they can come up with another way. 4. Display 2 snacks with prices. Have them tell you how much they need to "buy" both snacks. 5. Give your child some coins that is less than what they need to "buy" a snack. Have your child figure out how much more then need. 6.Working on identifying the difference between each coin and counting the value of individual types can not happen too much. Especially at this level. Some children can skip count with money easily and switch easily from counting by tens to fives to ones. Some children like to find the value of each coin and then add it up. Both strategies work. Counting money can be a challenging concept. Be patient and have fun. UPCOMING DATES: Monday May 8th - Kdg. and 1st grade concerts Tuesday May 9th - 2nd and 3rd grade concerts Wednesday May 10th - Drama club performance (seating is minimal) Thursday May 11 - 4th and 5th grade concert Friday May 12th - Arts Walk Have an enjoyable week. - Mrs. Spencer It is a bit hard for me to believe that there is only four weeks of school left. While I am looking forward to not having lesson plans to write or papers to grade, I am not looking forward to saying good-bye to my students. Each day I look at each one of them and see how much they have grown, changed, and learned throughout this school year. Sometimes I can see glimpses of the incredible young women and young men that they are going to be. I have gotten very attached to my students and will sincerely miss them when they leave my classroom at the end of the year.
MATH: Money is a very fun unit to teach and a fun concept for the kids to learn. An information sheet was placed in the homework folders for you to keep as a reference. They best way you can help support your child in learning money is repetitive, fun practice. Each day, pull out a handful of coins from your pocket, bottom of your purse, or between the couch cushions and count the money together. In school we often start with the coin that has the highest value first. Learning the difference between a quarter, dime, and nickel can be a challenging concept for first graders so be patient. Monday: Math workbook pg. 156 Tuesday: Worksheet Wednesday: wk bk pg. 158 Thursday: wk bk pg 159 - 160 SPALDING: We have 30 words this week.
