THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for all of the gifts and flowers last week! Thank you notes are going home today, but I wanted to make sure I said thank you here as well in case the thank-you notes don't make it home. ;-) I also appreciate the gifts that came in today. That was an unexpected, pleasurable surprise. MATH: There will be no math homework this week. Over the summer please continue to practice addition and subtraction math facts through 20. LITERATURE: Fairy Tales POETRY: We started the poetry recitations for "There Once Was a Puffin" today. SPALDING: Students will learn ten new words on Monday. The review will be on Tuesday and a ten-word spelling test will be on Wednesday. HISTORY: The "Westward Expansion" test will be on Tuesday. Study guides were sent out last Thursday. SCHOOL SUPPLIES: As the week progresses we will be sending home school supplies used during the year. Please check and clear out your child's backpack each night. UPCOMING DATES: Monday, May 21- PSO Family Night at Yogurtini Goodyear, 4-8 PM Tuesday, May 22 -PSO Spalding Sale, 7:30-8:30 AM or 12-1 PM May 22-24 -Half Day Dismissal, 12 PM Thursday, May 24 - Last Day of School, 12 PM Dismissal THOUGHTS ABOUT NEXT YEAR: As I was writing this I had a few general thoughts about the beginning of next year that I wanted to share with you. 1. Please make sure your child has all of his/her school supplies by Meet the Teacher Night. Also, please make sure that the books, workbooks, folders, etc. are all clearly labeled before arriving. Thirty students with brand new supplies are all coming into the classroom at the same time. Mix-ups do happened and books do get misplaced on occasion. When they are clearly labeled that is less likely to happen. After meet-the-teacher night and often after school the first few days, teachers and assistants can spend hours organizing, checking in supplies, and sending out notes to students with missing supplies. The process goes much quicker when all supplies are there and labeled. 2. By the end of the year, the pick-up process runs smoothly and it is easy to forget that the first two weeks don't run as smoothly. During the first two weeks there are usually a few new staff members and at least 60 new families learning the routine. The 90 new first graders have much to learn too. In kindergarten to were mostly escorted. In first graders have to learn how to get to cones and the office from their new classrooms. We do not release them until they are clear as to where they are going and that takes a bit longer. Please be patient and know that the pick-up process will run smoothly within a matter of 2 - 3 weeks or less. :-) 3. Throughout the year I get very attached to my students. During meet-the-teacher night please feel free to come down to my classroom and say hi. If there are a large number of new families/new students in the room I may not be able to say more then, "Hi" but I would love to see the kids. They grow up so much during the summer. A hug or high-five from my former students always helps to begin my year off right! Your children are amazing! Have a wonderful summer! - Mrs. Spencer.
