Wow! Busy day. I think I have barely sat down!
PETER PIPER PIZZA! Thank you to all of you who came. I got to see a lot of my students! This is my 5th year at this school so all of my students who I had the first year are now in 5th grade. One of the fun thing about being at the same school for several years in a row is being able to watch my students grow up. It was also a lot of fun to say hi to a lot of the parents who I have gotten to know over the years. WATER BOTTLES! WATER BOTTLES! WATER BOTTLES! It is hot hot hot this week! Well, actually it is hot hot hot for all of August... and September... and... I REALLY hope not October. Anyway, Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school every day. SPEAKING OF WATER AND KEEPING DEHYDRATED: Over the summer I had the wonderful opportunity to take a nutrition class. One of the projects we had to do for the class was to make a flyer or handout that talked about raw food and it's health benefits. The purpose behind the project was to create information to give to potential clients. As I am not currently interested in being a nutritional coach I got permission from my professor to create something that would be more useful to me as a classroom teacher. I knew how important it is to keep hydrated so I researched snacks that would be healthy AND help keep kids hydrated. I was surprised to discover that there is so many hydrating snacks! I picked some of my favorites and made a flyer. I will be sending a copy home at the end of the week. RED FOLDERS, AGENDAS, MATH WORKBOOKS: This is just a reminder to send red folders, agendas, and math workbooks back to school every day. Thanks! :-) ACADEMICS: Spalding - Spelling words start this week. Students will learn 5 words on Tuesday, 5 words on Wednesday and review on Thursday. The 10 word spelling test will be on Friday. Math - At this point in time all scholars should have started Xtramath and be completing Xtramath at least three times each week. The Xtramath homework is part of the overall math grade each quarter. - In class we students are studying number bonds. Number bonds help students identify the the parts and whole of addition and subtraction sentences. - On Tuesday we will be sending home Chapter 2 "Friendly Notes." These "Friendly Notes are an excellent resource when helping your child with math at home. They give the language and examples of things we are doing in the class. In first grade every chapter builds on the previous. Please keep the friendly notes at home so that you can easily access them. Geography - We completed a geography review in class and it was sent home in the homework folders. It was not checked or graded for accuracy and does not need to be returned to school. Feel free to use it as a study guide. The geography test is tomorrow. Science - Introduction to science Literature - "Different Lands, Similar Stories" - Identifying characters, setting, and plot in a story Grammar - Common nouns and proper nouns Poetry - "I'm Glad" UPCOMING DATES: Thursday, August 22 -K-5 Parent Curriculum Night, 6-7 PM (This event is for parents only!) Wow! We did it. The first grade class and teachers have successfully made it through the first week of school and are now entering week two. My favorite part of last week was my students' smiles! This blog is going to be another one full of a lot of important information. ;-) THANK YOU! First of all, I wanted to say thank you. - Thank you to all of you who sent e-mail reminders as to where your scholars go. Both students and teachers are learning so I really appreciate those of you who sent those quick reminders such, "Bob goes to the after school program on Wednesday afternoons." After school clubs will be starting in a couple of weeks so thank you in advance for letting me know the days your scholar may be attending clubs. - Thank you to Ms. Ramirez who has been painstakingly going through the supplies that have come in. She has spent hours labeling the ones that were not labeled and doing her best to keep track of which supplies still need to come in. If you end up getting double notifications of things you have already turned in just jot a note on the paper letting us know. - There is a lot to keep track of in the first few weeks. Thank you for working with us as we get to know each other. HOMEWORK FOLDERS, AGENDAS, AND MATH WORKBOOKS: Red homework folders will be sent home every night Monday - Thursday. Agendas will be sent home everyday including Fridays. Math workbooks will be sent home each day a page is assigned. Please make sure everything is placed in your scholar's backpack and returned the next day. DRESS CODE / UNIFORM POLICY: The Great Hearts Academy network has a strict uniform policy. Being a mom myself, I understand that sometimes a belt is forgotten or a child puts on a pair of bright red socks that goes unnoticed until they arrive in the classroom. If we notice things like that we will send a dress code reminder on the homework logs. If we notice something that is consistent with several students we will send a reminder through the blog. Dress code reminder: Shoes must be solid black or solid white. If there is white soles on black shoes or pink stripes on white shoes please use shoe polish to cover it up. MATH: Review - At the beginning of the year, first grade does a lot of math review. This week we are reviewing numbers through ten. This review is very important and builds a strong foundation as each concept builds on top of the other. Math Homework - Math homework is listed on the homework log. Please do only the workbook page that is listed in the log. If you notice any struggles or successes, feel free to write a note on the assigned homework page, the homework log, or send me an e-mail. Xtramath - Xtramath is also part of the homework and needs to be completed at least three times each week. Last week the sign-up/ log in directions, and your child's pin number was sent home in the homework folders. Please make sure your scholar is signed up by the end of the week. ACADEMICS: Math - Review numbers and numbers through ten. This is a short chapter. We will review concepts taught during the week on Thursday. The math test will be on Friday. Enjoy your week! HELLO!
Hello there! I enjoyed meeting everyone at Meet-the-Teacher night! BLOG: I will be updating this blog almost every Monday. Some weeks the blog will contain a lot of information and some weeks it will be shorter. Please read the blog on a weekly basis for general classroom information. The blogs will be longer during the first weeks of school as there is a long of information to pass on to you. COMMUNICATION: The best way to contact me is through e-mail. My e-mail is [email protected]. As it will take me awhile to connect people's e-mails with their scholars I do ask that, for the first quarter, you let me know whose parent you are. Example, "This is Mrs. Smith, Bob's mom." Thank you so much in advance for doing that. That will really help me out! TONS OF INFORMATION: During the first weeks of school you are going to be receiving A LOT of information! This information will come most often in the form of printed letters / packets that are in the homework folders, the blog, and occasional e-mails. Please read through the information carefully. Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions. SPEAKING OF A LOT OF INFORMATION: The scholars will be learning a lot of new procedures and getting used the classroom in the next several days. They are little and will sometimes misunderstand. I remember one of my past students asking me if we ate lunch in the classroom. I told him no, we eat in the MPR. Later that evening, while telling his mom about first grade, he told her that he didn't get to eat lunch. The mom realized there was a misunderstanding and e-mailed me to let me know. While something like that may seem small to us, it is big deal to the child. Because the mom let me know about the misunderstanding, I was able to talk to him the next day which helped him to feel a lot better. Therefore, do not hesitate to let me know if any procedures need to be clarified. DISMISSAL: Dismissal generally takes a lot longer during the first few days as there are at least 90 new parents who are learning where to go when picking up their scholars, new students who are being taught where to go, as well as staff getting back into the flow of things. Based on my past experience, dismissal flows more smoothly within the first couple of weeks so thank you for being patient during dismissal time during the first couple of weeks. SNACKS AND WATER BOTTLES: This is a reminder that students are allowed to have a small, healthy snack to eat at recess if they choose. If you do send a healthy snack with your child, please place it in the front pocket of your child's backpack. Also, please make sure your child has a water bottle each day. UPCOMING DATES: Tuesday, August 6 -First Day of School, 7:50 AM-3:10 PM Wednesday, August 7 - First Early-Release Wednesday, 7:50 AM - 1:00 PM Reminder: Every Wednesday is early-release and includes a lunch period. Tuesday, August 13 -PSO Family Night at Peter Piper Pizza (Dysart/I-10), 4-8 PM Thursday, August 22 - K-5 Parent Curriculum Night, 6-7 PM Friday, August 23 -Half Day Dismissal at 12 PM *Trivium Spirit Day* Reminder: No lunch is served on half days.
