My scholars do cute things all the time. This past week the scholars did all kinds of cute things. On Tuesday we read the Frog and Toad story "The Lost Button." On Wednesday the entire first grade class went on a button search. They then glued their buttons onto a jacket. The students in my class were so kind to each other. If one student wanted a blue button his/her classmates found one, etc. They shared with each other and made sure everyone had the same number of buttons. One student found a butterfly button. She knows I love butterflies so she gave me the button as a gift.
In History we wrote our names in Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics. I modeled my name first. One of my students said, "But Mrs. Spencer. I thought your name started with the paper clips!" (A couple of Egyptian characters do indeed look like paper clips.) :-) BOOK FAIR: The school book fair is taking place today through Wednesday. Parents have the opportunity to shop this evening from 4 - 7 pm. Today the scholars were allowed to wander around and look at the books. They made a list of books that interested them the most. This list is in the students red homework folders. After returning to our classroom I told the scholars that they should be very proud of themselves. They spent a lot of time really looking at the books. They were polite to each other. If students found books that they thought their classmates would like they shared . If you are unable to attend the parent shopping night, you may send money to school. Students will be allowed to visit and purchase books from the fair on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. If you choose to send money to school with your child, please put it in a zip-lock baggie, write your child's name on the baggie, and tape it inside the red homework folders. HALLOWEEN: This is just a reminder that the Great Hearts school system does not celebrate Halloween. Please do not send treats to pass out on that day. PICTURES: School pictures have arrived. If you ordered pictures, the picture envelope is in the red homework folders. If you did not order pictures, an online code card has been placed inside your child's homework folder. The pictures turned out SO CUTE!!! ACADEMICS: Math - We are working on addition and subtraction of numbers to 20 this week. Last week the students took a short number sense quiz that focused on ordering numbers, number patterns, and making ten. This quiz is in today's red homework folders. This is just a reminder for students to continue practicing their math facts on Xtramath. Knowing these math facts is helping students with addition through 20. Hello. Thank you to everyone who came to conferences last week. I often feel tired after conferences, but I also feel very excited and happy because I enjoy getting to visit everyone and I enjoy getting to know everyone a bit better. By the last third of my conferences I felt like my tongue was doing flip flops in my mouth!
OWL AT HOME - Students brought the book Owl at Home home today. We will no longer be using Owl at Home in the classroom so they may keep the book at home. MATH - During the 1st quarter most of the math concepts that are covered are review and building on concepts taught in Kindergarten. Starting in 2nd quarter, most of the concepts will be new. "Friendly Notes" pages are sent home periodically which contain information and language that you can use when helping your child with math. Knowledge of the basic math facts is essential because scholars can spend more time on the math concepts themselves rather than basic calculation. ACADEMICS - Spalding - Student will learn 10 new words on Monday, 10 new words on Tuesday, and 10 new words on Wednesday. We will review the 30 words on Thursday. The test is on Friday. Skills learned in this unit include, identifying a ten and some ones, ordering numbers, comparing numbers, methods of addition of subtraction, and story problems. The first set of "Friendly Notes" pages were sent home today. The second set will go home later then week. Please keep this information at home and use it to help your child while working on math.
