Every day I have at least 2 - 3 students telling me what they want to be when they grow up. For some students it stays pretty consistent, for other students it changes from telling to telling. First of all I wanted to say thank you for making my birthday very special. I was very surprised when students started bringing in food. I thought to myself, "Okay. We will have a party." I also appreciate all of the gifts and cards. I wrote thank-you notes for the gifts and put them into folders, but I know they don't always make it home, so, thank you! In the past I have been asked why I don't take the day off for my birthday. My answer is always, "Are you kidding?!?! 30 six and seven-year-olds with huge, happy grins, excitedly wishing me happy birthday!!!! I wouldn't miss it!" FAVORITE TEACHER MOMENTS IN THE LAST THREE WEEKS:
- On many days at multiple times, the class will be fully engaged in something they are working on. When they are engaged, the classroom fills with a low, relaxed murmur. If learning had sounds the low murmur is one of them. - During field day, one scholar got wet and was shivering with cold. Another scholar noticed and, without prompting, picked up her towel and very gently placed it around her shivering classmate. - While at the zoo, a scholar noticed me watching as she and the others in her group got food pellets to feed the ducks. She came over and shared a few of her pellets with me. ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 9 words on Monday, 10 words on Tuesday, 11 words on Wednesday and review on Thursday. The 30 word test will be on Friday. Math - This week students will be focusing on counting on by ones (45, 46, 47), counting on by tens (45, 56, 66), counting back by ones, counting back by tens, and comparing numbers. History - A study guide covering the "The Thirteen Colonies" unit is going home today. The test will be on Thursday. Science - First grade will begin their Geology unit on Friday. Literature - My Father's Dragon Poetry - Poetry recitations for "Washington" take place this week. Have a lovely week! As usual, the field day last Friday was wonderfully fun! I got very wet but not nearly as soaked as my first graders. There was a lot of laughter that day!
WILDLIFE WORLD ZOO: The first grade field trip to the Wildlife World Zoo is this Thursday, April 4th. Below is some information about the day. Clothing - Students must wear their school uniform. It is usually slightly chilly in the morning but it does get hot very quickly. If your child wants to wear a jacket in the morning, make sure it is light-weight so they can tie it around their waist when it gets hot. Your child may bring a hat and sunglasses to wear at the zoo. Scholars will be responsible for their jackets, hat, and sunglasses. Sunscreen - Please make sure to put sunscreen on your scholar before they come to school. Water bottles - Students may bring a DISPOSABLE water bottle. Please make sure to label the disposable water bottle with your child's name. Lunches - All lunches must be packed in a disposable baggie or paper bag. Please pack food items in disposable baggies. Students will be eating lunch at the zoo. Uneaten items and lunch bags will be disposed of at the zoo. Feeding the animals- There are several feeding stations around the zoo. If your child would like to feed the animals, please place some quarters in a plastic zip-lock bag with your child's name clearly labeled on the baggie. ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 10 new words on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, review the 30 words on Thursday, and take the spelling test on Friday.
