WE MUST LEARN THE SAME LESSONS THAT WE TEACHER OUR CHILDREN:
Almost every week, I have one scholar (a different one each time) who approaches me first thing in the morning and worriedly tells me they didn't get their homework done the night before. I usually pull them aside and ask, "Do you usually get your homework finished?" (Yes.) "Do you usually do everything you need to do?" (Yes.) "Well, thanks for letting me know. We all have times when we can't get everything done, but you will. You are okay." I had to remind myself of those exact words over the weekend as I looked at all the papers and other school things that I had yet to finish. Almost every day I have a scholar who feels upset because of a mistake he/she made. I usually say, "Mistakes don't feel good but we all make them. You are okay." I have to remind myself of those exact words each time I make a mistake. The compassionate scholars in 1B are alwasy telling me, "It's okay, Mrs. Spencer. :-) ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 10 words on Monday, 10 words on Tuesday, 10 words on Wednesday, review on Thursday, and take the spelling test on Friday. Hello there! I hope everyone had a fun three day weekend. I had the chance to do a massive grocery trip - something I had been needing to do for weeks. The break seemed to be a good thing for my students as well. They came in ready to learn.
EMERGENCY LUNCHES: It happens. Sometimes students forget their lunches. Most of the time the scholars remember to tell us first thing in the morning that they are missing their lunch. That gives us time to for the TA to walk to down to the office and help our scholar call for a lunch. Though it rarely happens, sometimes the students forget to tell us about the missing lunch until lunch starts. The procedure when this happens is to call the parent and ask for them to either bring a lunch in right away or give permission for the child to eat an emergency lunch that the PSO provides for such situations. ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 10 new words on Tuesday, 9 new words on Wednesday, review on Thursday, and take the 19 word spelling test on Friday. Math - The introduction to multiplication unit will finish up this week with a review on Thursday and a test on Friday. Friendly notes and the review will go home on Thursday. Literature - Bargain for Frances Science - Habitats Poetry - Students are reciting the poem "My Shadow" this week. Recitations began today. UPCOMING DATES: Tuesday, February 19 -PSO Night at Chipotle Goodyear, 4-8 PM Friday, February 22 - Kids Heart Challenge Family Night, 5-7 PM Friday, March 8 - No School: ATE In-service March 11-15 - No School: Spring Break Hello. So last week I had the pleasure of getting whatever bug seems to be floating around our classroom. First graders had so much compassion for their unwell classmates and for me as we navigated the week with coughs, congestion, and hoarse voices.
GREAT HEARTS DAY: As many of you know, Great Hearts Academies do not celebrate Valentine's Day. This year we will be celebrating Great Hearts Day. The information below was taken from the Athenian Chronicles: Wilber asked, "Why did you do all this for me?' he asked. 'I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you.' 'You have been my friend,' replied Charlotte. 'That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what's a life, anyway? By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone's life can stand a little of that." On Thursday, February 14, we will enjoy Great Hearts Day: A Celebration of the Gift of Friendship. On this day, each student and teacher will receive a large heart with their name written at the center, which will be passed around the classroom for their friends to write notes of encouragement and friendship. Scholars will enjoy a special treat together after lunch, share in beautiful stories of friendship during the day, and remember the value of friendship in their interactions with one another. Students are kindly asked not to bring store-bought valentines, candy, or gifts to school on this day. ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 8 new words on Monday, 8 on Tuesday, 8 on Wednesday, review on Thursday, and have the 24 word test on Friday. Math - The unit 11 math test is on Tuesday. We spent the full math block last Friday and today reviewing. Reviews and math quizzes are being sent home in the red folders. These do not need to be returned to school. - On Wednesday we will begin Unit 12 - Introduction of Multiplication as repeated addition. Science - Habitats Literature - A Bargain for Frances Poetry - "My Shadow" by Robert Lewis Stevenson (At this time, students will should be working on the full poem, have it memorized, and be reciting it as practice.) Have a great week! |
