Have you ever watched 32 six and seven-year-olds cut with scissors? Last week we were working on a owl project that involved a lot of cutting. The faces the scholasr made as they concentrated intensely on cutting out feet, beaks, heads and eyes was a total hoot! (No pun intended.) There are so many things about teaching first grade that are fun. Cutting projects is one of them.

I suggest you bookmark the Athenian Echo tab and the above calendar link for easy access. ON A PERSONAL NOTE: First quarter started. I blinked and we only have this one week left. Time never ceases to surprise me. Every time I write this blog I try to include all of the information I can think of. Every time I write this blog I always wonder if I am forgetting something important. I guess I have to stop worrying about that, write it, know I did well, and send out an e-mail later if I forgot anything. :-) ON A POSITIVE NOTE: Fall break is coming up! That means large chucks of time to spend with my son, play favorite games (I LOVE Ticket to Ride and I have the Ticket to Ride expansion pack too which makes the game even more fun!), enjoy hours of crafting, baking, and take a couple of day trips. Has anyone ever been to Mortimer Farms? That is one of the places we are going! Have a good week!

Mrs. Garza had a wonderful birthday celebration this past Friday. Both on-line learners and in-person learners were able to briefly celebrate. 6-7 year-olds celelbrating a birthday is so joyful. You can't help but catch their joy!

ON A PERSONAL NOTE: This 1st quarter of the the 2020 - 2021 school year has definitely been the most interesting (and exhausting) quarter I have experienced. It is not uncommon for me to go home and do a full face plant into the couch. Fridays even more so. Every Friday is popcorn-for-dinner night as that is something that takes very little effort to prepare. No arguments from my son. Popcorn dinners are his favorite. NAME THE GOOD: - Every day my students and I have a chance to be totally goofy. The laughter and the smiles are so wonderful to see and hear!!!!!! Have a beautiful week! I hope everyone had a nice three-day weekend. The teachers didn't get a three-day weekend. We had school.

Math - Addition concepts review, introduction to subtraction History - Ancient Mesopotamia Literature - "Different Lands, Similar Stories," Introduction to Owl at Home Grammar - Proper nouns and common nouns Poetry- "The Little Turtle" by Vachel Lindsay *Note* - As stated in the Athenian Echo, there is no synchronous learning via ZOOM for distance learners today, September 15th. All work is asynchronous and posted on Google Classroom for today. HOUSE KEEPING ITEMS: Below are a few items that parents have e-mailed and asked about. Google Classroom - As stated in last week's Athenian Echo and last week's blog, administration has removed all in-person students from Google Classroom. distance learners are, of course, still able to access Google Classroom. Submitting Work in Google Classroom - We kindly ask that classwork is submitted in Google Classroom in as prompt a manner as possible. Please make sure all pages of an assignment are submitted. Thank you. :-) Xtramath - Xtramath is a math facts program for all students (both in-person and distance learners) Art Supplies - Several parents have e-mailed about the Art Supply list. With the exception of colored pencils, I believe everything on the list are items first graders already have. After speaking to Mr. Cavaletto, he did say that students will need colored pencils starting in the 2nd quarter. ON A PERSONAL NOTE: Sometime, between the end 1st quarter and the middle of 2nd quarter, my students become "my kids." As I tell my family and friends about my days at school I will often say, "My kids learned this in math. My kids and I discussed such and such in literature." When I write the blog and e-mails I will often catch myself writing "my kids" and have to go back and change the wording to "my students" or "the scholars" but in my mind my wonderful students are always "my kids." Have a beautiful rest of the week! Hi. I hope everyone had a fun three-day weekend. I had the chance to spend some time with family and work on some of my favorite craft activities for a couple of days. I then used Monday as a day to catch up with school stuff, write lesson plans, etc. Overall it was a very nice weekend! FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT TEACHING: I have a lot of favorite things about teaching. One of many is being able to see the wonder of discovery in my students' faces. On Friday we went through the scientific process with an experiment so see if a paper towel would stay dry by putting it in a cup and dipping the cup into a bowl of water. The look of amazement on everyone's faces when I pulled a dry paper towel out of the cup inspired so much joy within me! GENERAL ACADEMICS: Spalding - Continued review / introduction of phonograms - Students will learn 4 new words on Tuesday and 4 new words on Wednesday. The review is on Thursday. The 8-word spelling test will be on Friday. Math - Continued focus on methods of addition including counting on and mental math. - looking at an equation and determining if it is true or false Science - The Scientific Method History - Ancient Mesopotamia Literature - Different Lands, Similar Stories - Little Red Riding Hood and Hu Go Po Grammar - Proper nouns (Mary, Target, Legos) vs. common nouns (girl, store, toy) Poetry -"The Little Turtle" By Vachel Lindsay ATTENDANCE REMINDER: If your scholar(s) are in-person student, they can only be marked present if they physically attend class. In-person scholars are placed in a separate category entirely by the Arizona Department of Education, and are now on a separate track. Though they have access to Google Classroom for a few more days, this format cannot replace in-person attendance. If your in-person scholar(s) need to be absent be sure to call the Archway Trivium East Attendance line at 623-218-6607. GOOGLE CLASSROOM ACCESS: As stated in the Athenian Echo, in-person scholars will only have access to Google classroom for a couple of more days. First grade in-person scholars will have access to Google Classroom until this Thursday, September 10th. Please see the Athenian Echo for more details. EXTRA MASKS: Though we are guiding and supporting the scholars in taking care of their masks it is inevitable that that they will occasionally get lost, dirty, or broken. For that reason, please place and extra mask or two in your child's backpack. ON A PERSONAL NOTE: Last week was a full one. In just a five-day period we had fully on-line learning, the return of several students to campus, and began the new journey of having in-person and on-line students at the same time. I am a bit in awe of how much was fit into a tiny 5-day week! NAME THE GOOD: - Every student in our class has a three-drawer unit next to their desk! Thank you to those who sent them in and thank you to those who were able to donate extras! - It was wonderful to finally meet some of my students in-person. I so look forward to meeting more in the future! I also had the opportunity to "meet" some of my students parents in the pick-up line. Have a wonderful week! |
