There are so many exciting things going on!

1ST GRADE CONCERT - MONDAY DECEMBER 2ND: The K-2 concerts have been scheduled for the Monday we get back from Thanksgiving break. Please see the Athenian Echo and music blog for details about times and concert dress. The first grade concert begins at 6:00. First grade students must be present and ready for rehearsal at 5:30. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD HAS GONE TO THE RESTROOM BEFORE ARRIVING! You may pick up your scholars in the court yard after the concert. First grade scholars will have no homework that night. I WILL NEED YOUR HELP: I can be extremely protective of the students in my class and I always want to make sure they are as safe as possible. After each concert, the teachers lead their students into the courtyard at the front of the church where parents can collect their scholars. This period of time is the most stressful time of the night for me because, even with the lights, it is dark and difficult to clearly see. The best way that you can help me is to please be sure that I have visual contact of your child with you when picking them up. If you are unsure if I saw your child with you, please verbally let me know. Me seeing your child with you and/or you telling me, "Mrs. Spencer, I have [Lucy]," will help me in knowing your child is safe. Thank you so much! "To be a fly on the wall..."
How often have you wished to be a fly on the wall and be able to listen to conversations? Every time my scholars work in math groups or have group discussions, I get to be the fly on the wall. I get to be the one who listens to their conversations as they discuss how they know 20 comes before 18 in a number pattern that involves counting back by 2s. I get to listen to them discuss how the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations are similar (or different) from ancient Mesopotamian and/or Egyptians civilizations. It's fascinating and entertaining and very educational! CLASSROOM REMINDERS: Belts! Belts! Belts! - All uniform shorts and pants must be worn with a belt! In the last three weeks there has been a growing trend where several students each day are without a belt for several days in a row. Please check and make sure your scholar has remembered his/her belt before heading out the door. Math Workbooks - Scholars use their math workbooks in class almost every day. Please make sure scholars return their math workbooks to their backpacks after completing homework each night. Thank you so much for double checking for these items each morning. I really appreciate it! ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 10 new words on Monday, 10 new words on Tuesday, 10 new words on Wednesday, and review on Thursday. the 30-word spelling test will be on Friday. As usual, this day was fun for students and teachers alike. The first grade team chose to dress in theme this year so we all dressed as Ancient Egyptians. Part of my costume include a long black wig which threw off the scholars a bit until I told them that it was still me! Let's see if I can remember which historical figures and literary characters visited our classroom... Little Red Riding Hood Several Egyptians, Horus Madeline Several knights and kings from various stories Princesses from the classic fairy tales Owl I know I am missing some. They were all adorable!! We spent a long time discussing the difference between the two words but it won't hurt to discuss it at home as well. Math - We start our Geometry unit today. I have a lot of information to give you in this week's blog. LITERARY AND HISTORICAL FIGURE DAY: Literary and Historical Figure Day is this Friday, November 8th. A flyer was sent home a couple of weeks ago with information and guidelines. I am including the guidelines in this letter as well. Dress Up Guidelines: 1. Your costume must be of a literary or historical figure that is a part of the Archway Trivium East curriculum, or a character from a book in the library. 2. Your costume should cover at least the same areas as the Archway polo and shorts/skirts (just above the knee). No jeans. 3.Items in your costume should not have any logos on them. 4.You may wear non-uniform shoes (such as sandals), provided that they are appropriate for your character. 5.No masks, face paint, or hair dye are permitted. 6. Small props are allowed, but should be put away during class. No props that are or appear to be weapons are permitted. 7. Students who do not follow the guidelines for dress-up day may be sent home. 8. You are not required to dress-up. 9. Gentlemen should dress up as male figures and ladies should dress up as female figures. Below is a few examples of what 1st grade scholars have dressed up as in the past. Sherlock Holmes Egyptian Character from classic fairy tales Characters from Aesops (one girl dressed up as a cow from the Maid in the Milkpail) Abraham Lincoln This is just a few of many. If you are unsure if a character appropriate please e-mail me. UNIFORMS: Mr. Scott visited our classroom today to discuss the uniform dress code. Specific points that were discussed in our class include: - Cardigan sweaters, pullover, or fleece jackets are allowed in the classroom. Pullover sweaters or sweater vests are not allowed in the classroom even if a patch is sewn on to them. - Students may pull long sleeve shirts on over their head to wear outside. However, students may not wear long sleeve shirts under their short sleeve polo shirts. Long sleeve polo shirts are available to purchase through the uniform vendors. (Note* - I have learned from experience that the long sleeve polo shirts run small so if you choose to order one order one size larger.) - Shoes must be solid white or solid black tennis shoes. High tops and boots are not allowed. - All students must wear a dark belt with pants or shorts. Please refer to the family handbook for more specific details or examples about the uniform dress code. ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn ten new words on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The review is on Thursday and the spelling test is on Friday.
