Dear Parents, Hello. I am sure many, if not all of you have already thought of this, but I wanted to pass the idea on anyway. I have been looking back at some of the pictures I took during project night. Those costumes are so wonderful! I believe we will be having literary and historical figure day every November so keep those costumes. On the slight chance that the children don't grow out of them, all or part of the costumes could be used for that day as well. :-)

My students looked so incredible in their costumes. I tried to take pictures of everyone, but then it got really busy. If anyone took pictures and are willing to e-mail them to me I would love to see them! I was so proud of my class. They handled themselves well!
WATER BOTTLES: Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school every day. Several scholars have been forgetting to bring theirs on a regular basis. The temperatures are cooler, but the children still get thirsty. MATH: This week we continue to study numbers through 40. Last week we sent out the 2nd math information sheet which we placed in your child's red homework folder. We also sent home a "base ten block kit with directions on how to use the them to help your child with the addition and subtraction concepts. Please do not send the kit or the information pages back to school. They are for your use at home to help your child. Be on the lookout for the next information sheet which will go out on Thursday. A few parents have asked for suggestions or ideas as to how they can help their child with the math concepts. Below are several suggestions: - Using the information sheets as a guide, write down some math problems and have your child solve them. - Even if your child had the opportunity to work on the homework in school, look through your child's homework assignment. Have them correct problems they missed and explain what they learned. - Continue practicing addition and subtraction math facts through 20. If they are totally confident with the math facts change them up by showing the math facts with missing parts such as 18-__=__ - Look through your child's math papers that come home in the blue folder. Go through and correct ones they missed. Have them look at the papers and explain a strategy they used to solve the problem. This poem is placed inside your child's homework pack each week. In the classroom, in all subjects we are guiding the scholars to divide up large tasks into small steps. Last week we encouraged them to learn the first stanza of the poem. On Friday we had a few moments in which students were given the opportunity to practice the first stanza. It was amazing to see how many students had worked on that first stanza and already had it memorized! In order to continue with the small steps, I encourage you to help your child continue to practice the first stanza and have the second stanza memorized by the end of this week. A MESSAGE FROM OUR CLASSROOM COORDINATOR: Our wonderful classroom coordinator, Lisa has asked me to make an announcement in the blog about the upcoming specials teachers appreciation week. You may want to go back through them with your child by creating problems that are similar to what is shown on the information sheets. This will be a helpful review for your child. Have a great week! Project Night and What to Expect
Hello ATE Families, Archway Trivium East would like to invite you to our Tour through History Project Night event. You will have the opportunity to meet and interact with some of the most important figures in the history of the world from ancient times through the 16th century and to celebrate the learning of our Kindergarten through 5th grade scholars. Please plan to arrive with your scholar (in costume for 1st-5th graders) at 5:50pm. They will then report to their classrooms (3rd grade will report to the Multipurpose Room). Guests will assemble in the courtyard until 6:00 when the community will be invited to begin the Tour through History where they can visit the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome; see the symbols of our very own United States come to life; and view a museum of the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. Our scholars are excited to share their learning from Project Week and we encourage you to visit as many classrooms as you can on this evening. Plan to make your way back towards your scholar’s classroom at around 6:45 to be ready to depart from the event at 7:00. We have had a few other questions in regard to the expectations on Project Night. This is a general message to inform you of the key details. In class scholars have been working on writing a 3-5 sentences summary with the information and details the students have written from their homework project packet. We have completed their final draft today and will send a copy home to look at over the weekend. The summary will be what they memorize and say during project night. Project night is titled "A Tour through History.” With their costume and the summary they memorized, it will be as if they are the actual historical figure. We will have our classroom set up so that parents can walk around and stop at each student. This will be when the student will recite their summary. An example of the recitation would be "My name is Mut. I am known for being a goddess of the sky," and so on with one or two more details. Scholars are expected to be in costumes only for project night, not during the school day. Costumes may be simple and should reflect what the historical figure would wear or look like. Everyday objects and materials that families already have around are welcome and purchasing elaborate costumes is not required. Appropriate props are also welcome if they add to the representation of the historical figure. The same guidelines as Historical/Literary Figure Dress Up Day should be used:
Mark your calendars: Project Night WHERE: Archway Trivium East WHEN: January 11th, 2017 TIME: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Your scholars have been working very hard. We look forward to seeing you there! Sincerely, First Grade Team Hello to 2017! First of all I wanted to say thank you for all of the wonderful gifts that were given to me before break. Each one was so special and I really appreciate them. Thank you also anyone who participated in the snowstorm. The decorated snowflakes are beautiful.
REMINDER: The students are dismissed at 12:00 all week this week. There is no lunch, but students are allowed to eat a healthy snack during their recess. SPALDING: This week we are doing an in-class review of some particularly difficult words that we learned during the second quarter. We are also doing a focused review on handwriting which includes the correct way to hold the pencil as well as correct letter formation. MATH: This week we are starting our study of numbers through 40. HISTORY: This week is project week. Each grade level is focusing on a specific period in History. First grade's focus is ancient Egypt. We studied ancient Egypt for several weeks before break. Homework and in-class activities are focused on project week activities. A parent letter was sent home, along with information about your child's Egyptian figure. The letter that was in the homework folder is also included below: Attention Parents/Guardians: Important Project Week Information Dear Parents, This week is project week, January 3rd-6th. We look forward to partnering together to learn about notable figures in history. First grade has been assigned to look at the culture and people of Ancient Egypt. Your scholar has been assigned an important historical figure from this time era. Coming home is an Encyclopedia Britannica Resource/other (in some cases). The resource you have received is the main resource we would like you to use. You are not limited to this resource however other resources need to be carefully read through by parents to approve the appropriateness of the information. Keep in mind the time era and the culture being studied when researching, noting that some facts may be considered taboo in our time and culture but were considered the norm for this culture and time period. Use your own discretion and guidance when helping your scholar study facts. As you read through the articles with your scholars help them underline or highlight important information that they may use for their summary. This project requires parent involvement and aide. Scholars will be coming home with a packet to fill in each night. It is very important that the homework is done each night and sent back to school the next day. We will be using the research and answers from the previous night’s homework to help us write our in-class summaries. Scholars will be asked to memorize their summaries and present their historical figure in costume on project night, January 11th. Scholars will also present their summaries to the class. Both presentation and attendance at project night will be for a grade. If you have any questions please message your homeroom teacher via Jupiter. Thank you for your collaboration! Sincerely, First Grade Team HOMEWORK: Most of the scholars will have two red folders in their backpack today. The empty one is their old homework folder and can stay at home. The new one has their homework assignments inside. The project week homework is the only homework that your scholar will be working on this week. Each night's homework will be used during class the next day so it is very important that the homework is brought back to school each day. Have a great week! Sincerely, Mrs. Spencer |
