Dear Parents,
Hi there! This is just a very quick mid-week post to update you on a couple of things as well as answer a couple of questions that have come up. JUPITER: When you receive a message from Jupiter there is a small button that says "reply." When you click on the reply button you will come to a page where you can click on settings to create your own password. If you bookmark the page you can then go straight there to log in. I do hope that information helps. If not, please let me know and I will do my best to help you. PIZZA PARTY: The pizza party for our class is this Friday during lunch time. The students will have applesauce and their choice of cheese or pepperoni pizza. You are still welcome to pack a small lunch on that day but it is not necessary. The pizza party is for the scholars and teachers of 1B only. NO SCHOOL: Since there is no school this coming Monday (Sept. 5th) for Labor Day I will not be posting my normal weekly blog until Tuesday the 6th. PICTURE DAY: Picture day is scheduled for Friday September 9th. More information will follow. Have a great rest of the week! - Mrs. Spencer

WOW!
I witnessed something amazing on Friday morning, but before I tell you what I witnessed, let me back up a bit. We want the classroom to be a safe environment -where each scholar feels safe to contribute to activities and discussions. One of the ways we do this is by learning to listen to each other. The scholars are taught to "track the speaker." That means that when one of their classmates is answering a question or sharing a thought, everyone's hand must be down and they must look at the person who is speaking. They are encouraged to really hear what their classmate is saying. Now let me tell you what I witnessed! We had an assembly this past Friday morning. During Headmaster Washburn's talk, there were several opportunities for students to answer questions and share ideas. Scholars of all ages were able to contribute. The amazing thing that I witnessed is that every one of your children tracked and listened to each person who spoke. They really heard what their schoolmates were saying!!! VOLUNTEERING All volunteers must have their fingerprint clearance completed prior to their first visit to the classroom. If you want to chaperone on a field trip you must have your fingerprint clearance. SignUp Genius will be used to organize volunteers throughout the year. Classroom Visits Parents will be invited into our classroom for special activities and programs during the school year. Please read the weekly news on my blog to find out about upcoming events. Please be aware that parents and/or children are not allowed in the classroom without a teacher present. Please enter through the office, sign in, and follow the school rules while on campus (You must be fingerprint cleared). If you would like to have a conference concerning your child, please contact me to arrange one before or after school, so I can give you my undivided attention. This coming Friday (Sept. 2nd) we will have our classroom pizza party during our lunch time. This is for the teachers and students of 1B only. You can still send a cold lunch with your child that day but there will be at least one slice of pizza and some applesauce for them as well. Good job 1B!!!!! I hope to see many of you at curriculum night. Have a great week. Mrs. Spencer Dear Parents,
Hello! I have several topics that I need to discuss this week. :-) Supplies: We are now beginning our third week of school and there are still several students who are missing their Writing with Ease pages, Math workbooks, and/or Pink Spalding notebooks. These items are absolutely necessary for your child to have in order to fully participate in our first grade curriculum. The links can be found on the Archway Trivium East website. 1. Click on "Books, Supplies, Uniforms, Forms" 2. Click on "2016 - 2017 Literature Consumable List 3. Scroll down to 1st grade and click on the links for the needed items. If you have not ordered these items please e-mail me and let me know, along with the date in which you expect these items to arrive. We are beginning our formal spelling lessons this week. I can give paper to any child who does not have their notebook, but they will have to recopy everything into their notebook when it arrives. Homework: First grade students have homework Monday - Thursday. All homework, along with a homework log is sent in a red folder. The first few weeks of homework are pretty mild, but the load will become heavier as the weeks pass. The homework log must be signed every day and your child must bring their homework folder to school every morning. Reviewing your child’s work is a great way to keep abreast of their progress with the advanced curriculum. When you check your child’s homework, please go over any problem areas or incorrect answers with him or her so that they have a clear understanding of the concept before we build further upon it the next day. If you are noticing many mistakes or a lack of greater understanding, please jot me a note on their homework signature sheet, so I can re-teach the concept to your child. If a student does not have their completed homework, they will stay in at recess to complete the missing assignment(s). This will help them to build responsibility. The process of completing homework, (2) showing it to you for signing and (3) bringing it back and turning it in builds responsibility. We send blue Friday Folders home each Friday. These folders contain both graded and ungraded work that your child completed over the week. Some weeks will have more items then other weeks depending on the type of activities we do each day. Please go over the work with your child. I suggest having your child explain the work to you. Friday folders must be returned to school each Monday. Pick - up procedures: The first grade stays in their classrooms during afternoon pick-up. Students must remain at their seats and either sit silently or silently read a book. I also encourage the students to watch for their name on the screen. You can help make this process more efficient by letting your child know how they are going to be picked up. If they know they are going to be picked up by car at the cones they can watch that screen. If they know they are going to be picked up at the front office they can watch that screen. Please e-mail me or write a note on your child's homework log if you have signed him/her up for any after school clubs. Communication: The best way to contact me is through Jupiter. You should receive a reply message if you receive correspondence from me but it is also best to create an account. I can be contacted through email but the preferred method of communication is through the Jupiter system. My email address is: KSpencer@archwaytriviumeast.org . If you have a quick note you may write notes in your child's homework log. The very best way to get information about our classroom is through my blog. To get to my page: 1.Go to www.archwaytriviumeast.org. 2. Click on "About" 3. Click on "Faculty 4. Scroll down to my name and click on "Blog" You can view my blog at triviumeastmoreno.blogspot.com/ . Before emailing me about a classroom related question refer to the blog. Bathroom procedures: I wanted to make a quick note about our bathroom procedure. In class I use a bathroom ticket procedure to help minimize the abuse of bathroom privileges. It is an incentive for using the restroom at appropriate times. Our scholars are given three recesses and are encouraged and reminded frequently to use the restroom during these times. They are also allowed to use the restroom during lunch. The recess times are scheduled about every 2 hours so there are many opportunities to go to the restroom. The tickets are to be used in an emergency only during instructional times. They start out with two a day and if they have been responsible with their bodies by going to the restroom at the appropriate time they have an opportunity to earn a small reward at the end of the day. Please encourage your children to always try to go to the restroom during recess and lunch. Please know they will never be denied the use of the restroom in class. I hope this information was helpful. You are welcome to e-mail me if you need further clarification of any topic discussed in the blog. Sincerely, Mrs. Spencer Hello to all! We are now into our second week of school and I can already see growth in each of my students. We are going to continue to work on classroom procedures as we get into more of our academics.

Hello. We have finished our first amazing day of school. The first grade scholars worked hard at learning the procedures and expectations for our classroom and our school. We will continue to learn and practice procedures throughout this week. I would also like to thank all of the parents who were in the pick-up line for being so patient as your children learned the procedure and we worked to get you children out to you. I do have a few reminders. School start time: All students must be in their classrooms at 7:50. This is ten minutes earlier than last year. Any student who is tardy must be checked in at the front office. Tomorrow is Wednesday early release day. Students will be dismissed at 1:15. Dress code for shirts: All students must wear a SOLID white or light blue polo shirt that has the Archway Trivium East crest. No blouses and no polo shirts that have a colored stripes on the inside of the collar are allowed. Dress code for shoes: All shoes must be either SOLID white or SOLID black. Black shoes can not have any white soles or other white markings on them. Please refer to the dress code policy in the parent's handbook if you have any questions. I also sent this post as an e-mail through Jupiter. If you did not receive it please let me know via e-mail. Have a wonderful evening. I look forward to seeing your children tomorrow. Sincerely, Mrs. Spencer Hello there wonderful parents and amazing scholars! Welcome to the first grade at Archway Trivium East!
A bit about me: I am originally from Iowa and received an elementary education / early childhood education degree from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. I taught school in Nebraska and Arizona for a total of thirteen years in the preschool, kindergarten, first and fourth grades. I also spent some time in other grades as a substitute teacher. I took a break from teaching to stay at home with my son. My son and I started our Great Hearts journey at the same time last year. He as a first grader and me as a first grade teacher assistant. A bit about out teacher's assistant: Mrs. Scott will be the teacher assistant in our classroom. She is orginally from Virginia and attended college in Utah. She is married to Mr. Scott (Assistant Headmaster). They lived in Virginia until last year, when they moved here to be part of the founding of Archway Trivium East. We are looking forward to meeting all the children who we will be able to greet each morning. We are very excited to be the ones to guide each child and watch them grow both in academics and virtue during this academic year. With love, Mrs. Spencer Mrs. Scott |
