Last week was an amazing week. I can see evidence of maturity and growth in all of the students. I was also surprised at how tall everyone has become. It felt almost as if every single one of them grew at least 10 inches over spring break!!!! Okay. Slight exaggeration, but they really do all look a lot taller.
Reading / Literature: We are beginning our second week reading Sam the Minuteman. The scholars are finding it extremely interesting to read because it parallels with what we are learning in history. Math: We begin week 2 of the unit on "Numbers through 120." This is a very long unit so I will be sending home an information sheet each week. The second information sheet will be in the red homework folders tomorrow. Please keep the information sheet to use while helping you child with homework. Last Friday the students took a short quiz on the concepts that were taught during the week. I am sending the quiz home in the homework folders today so that you can look over the quiz. Each lesson that we have builds on the next one. If you see that you child is struggling with a concept or you need clarification in how to help them at home, do not hesitate to contact me with your questions. Monday: Math workbook pg. 117 Tuesday: Wk bk pg. 120 Wednesday: Wk bk pgs. 121-123 Thursday: Wk bk pgs. 124 - 125 Spalding: We have 29 words this week. Hello and we are back for the final quarter. It is going to go much too quickly. There is so much to learn!
Reading: All scholars have received new bags for their baggie books. Please make sure the books are returned to school each day inside the baggies. Literature: We started reading Sam and the Minuteman today. If you scholar does not have the book please make sure it is here by Wednesday of this week. Other students are always willing to share, but it is difficult for the students who do not have the required books to complete their independent assignments. Math: We started the unit on "Numbers through 120." This is a very long unit so I will be sending home an information sheet each week. The first one will be in the red homework folders tomorrow. Please keep the information sheet to use while helping you child with homework. This unit builds on the previous units, "Numbers through 10" and "Numbers through 40." Confidence and knowledge in the basic addition and subtraction math facts will be helpful so I suggest continued practice with math flashcards. Monday: Math workbook pgs. 105 - 106 Tuesday: Workbook pg. 107 Wednesday: Workbook pgs. 113 - 114 Thursday: Workbook pg. 115 Spalding: We have 24 words this week. Monday: stairs, stream talks, tiny, words, trust, extra, dress Tuesday: beside, teach, happen, begun, collect, file, provide, sight Wednesday: stood, fixed, fix, born, goes, does, Tuesday, hold Poetry: The new poem is "Washington"' by Nancy Byrd Turner. A copy of the poem is in the homework packet. The poem is a longer one with many interesting words, and when presented well, sounds quite musical. I suggest that the memorization of the poem is approached in a similar way as "My Shadow." When discussing the poem with the scholars I am going to suggest to learn one stanza each week, then on the fourth week focus on the presentation. History: The 13 colonies Upcoming dates: Friday March 31st - Half day dismissal (12:00) Friday April 14th - No school Water bottles: Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school every day. Have a great week! - Mrs. Spencer 3RD QUARTER CELEBRATION:
