Several years ago, I came across a fun quote that I resonated with. I love it, and say it to myself often: "When something goes wrong yell, 'PLOT TWIST!' and move on." Have a nice week!

Hello there. After a one week blog hiatus we are back.
Project night was great! I actually liked the staggered arrival and departure times. It wasn't so crowded and allowed for more parent interactions with the scholars. The presentations went so well too. I was very impressed with the scholars' knowledge of their body systems. OOPS! Last Friday, Mrs. Garza was asked to help out in another classroom for the day so I had someone else in my classroom for the day. I had the substitute TA put the papers into the blue Friday folders. It was brought to my attention today that several of the papers ended up in the wrong folders. If you noticed that another scholar's papers were in your child's blue Friday folder please send them back to school and we will be sure to get the papers to the correct person. Sorry for the inconvenience! GENERAL REMINDERS: Uniform fleece jackets - Please sure your scholar's name is in the jackets and cardigans. They all look alike so if one gets lost it can be difficult for scholar's too tell which one is theirs's. - Be sure to check the fleece jackets and the cardigans when your scholar brings them home. Sometimes they get mixed up with other scholars' belongings. - When we find random jackets that that don't have names (or have names that are smudged and unrecognizable) Mrs. Garza and I frequently hold them up to ask who they belong too. The most common answer is, "Not mine." - There is a nice mountain of uniform items at the front office. If your scholar is missing anything I highly highly encourage you to stop by and go through them to see if you can locate the missing items. E-mail - When e-mailing me, please be sure to always include Mrs. Garza in the e-mail as well. Our e-mail addresses are: [email protected] [email protected] Water bottles - It may be chilly, but scholars still get thirsty. Please be sure to send a water bottle to school with your scholar every day. MATH WORKBOOK 1A: Hi. We are sending home math workbooks 1A in the blue Friday folders this week. We didn't do all of the 1A workbooks pages. Going through and completing pages that we did not do would be a great way to review with your scholar. GENERAL ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 10 new words Monday - Wednesday, review on Thursday, and take the test on Friday. Math - Addition and Subtraction of numbers within 20 *Note - The math concepts are more challenging this quarter than preview quarters. History - Early Explorers and Settlers Literature - Beatrix Potter Grammar - Pronouns Poetry - "The Swing" by Robert Lewis Stevenson *This poem is three stanzas long. By now students should have the first two stanzas memorized and focus on stanza 3 this week. UPCOMING DATES: Saturday, January 29 - Great Hearts Career Fair, 9 AM - 12 PM Friday, February 4 - Half Day Dismissal, 12 PM Trivium Spirit Day No lunch served on half days. Saturday, February 19 - Trivium Run the Virtues 5K/1-Mile Fun Run Have a good week. The projects that came into the classroom today are very impressive. Students started presenting in the classroom today. Before I had them present we talked about how to stand and speak during the presentation. Four students were able to present today. I continued to be impressed with their knowledge. The rest of the class will be able to present tomorrow and Wednesday. These scholars are just amazing. When you come for project night be sure to visit with the other scholars that are present. Two questions that usually get them talking is, "What is the most interesting thing you learned? How did you make your project?"
PROJECT WEEK / PROJECT NIGHT INFO (CONT.): - Most of the students brought their projects in today. Great! If your scholars did not bring the project in today (Monday) please be sure he/she brings it to school tomorrow. - Communication went out last week from Mr. Philabaum about staggering the arrival and departure of families so that there is not as many people in the school all at the same time. The information is also in the Athenian Echo that goes out each Friday. The letter sent out last week states: "We have decided to stagger family’s attendance to minimize the flow of traffic in our classrooms and inside the building. We ask that all families adhere to the following schedule: 6:00 – 6:30pm : All families with last names A-L to attend. 6:30 – 7:00pm : All families with last names M-Z to attend. This spread allows families who have students in multiple grades to attend at the same time. Additionally, it will cut the number of families present in each classroom in half. You can read the whole letter by following this link: https://myemail.constantcontact.com/Project-Night-Update.html?soid=1121867127686&aid=tXKkx_CF0HY GENERAL ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students learned 10 new words today (Monday). They will learn 10 new words on Tuesday and 6 new words on Wednesday. We are not assigning any homework for Wednesday night because of project night. After the six Wednesday words are taught we will practice them in the classroom. Thursday is the 26 -word review and the spelling test is Friday. Math - This week we are starting the "Number to 40" unit. This is a very detailed, extensive unit. Scholars may find this unit more challenging than previous math units. This week is a focus on tens and ones. For example: 36 is: 3 tens and 6 ones 30 and 6 makes 36 30 + 6 = 36 3 tens is the same as 30 30 is the same as 3 tens and zero ones - We will also be looking at number order (counting on and counting back within 40. - It is not possible to practice too much with making groups of tens, identifying the number of tens and ones, and recognizing the larger numbers are tens and some ones. - The first "Friendly Notes" information page for this chapter went home today in the red homework folders. I highly suggest keeping it so you can use it as a reference when your scholars works on math homework. Science - Human Body Presentations History - Early American Explorers and Settlers Literature - The Bears on Hemlock Mountain Grammar - Pronouns (words used in place of a noun) Poetry - "The Swing" by Robert Lewis Stevenson *Note - This poem is three stanzas long. I suggest focusing on the first stanza this week. UPCOMING DATES: Wednesday, January 12 - PSO Restaurant Night at Mod Pizza, 10:30am-10:00pm Wednesday, January 12 - K-5 Project Night, 6 PM 6:00 – 6:30pm : All families with last names A-L to attend. 6:30 – 7:00pm : All families with last names M-Z to attend. Monday, January 17 - No School: Civil Rights Day The school office will be closed. ON A PERSONAL NOTE: When I first started writing this blog post and I had all kinds of ideas of what I was going to write in this section. My ideas seeped out of my brain and are now puddled in some unknown place. See you Wednesday night! Hi. Okay. So I already wrote 2021 for the blog title and had to go back and change it. 2022 came very fast and my mind seems to still be hanging out in 2021 so don't be surprised if, in some future blog, I write 2021 instead of 2022. Ha! I will probably be some strange, random time like in March.
Right before break we sent out letters to let you know about project week and what body system your child was assigned. Wait! Don't panic! When my son was in first grade I lost the letter too (and I was one of the teachers) so don't worry. We have all the information you need. THANK YOU!: Thank you for all of the amaing gifts that you sent to us for Christmas. I know Mrs. Garza placed thank-you notes from her in the red folders today. Mine will be coming in a few days. In case thank-you notes get opened by your scholars but don't quite make it into your hands... THANK YOU! PROJECT WEEK: In today's red homework folder you will find: - The body system your child has been assigned. - Homework/classroom packet In tomorrow's homework folder you will find: - A more in depth project week and project night information letter - Project ideas - Information on how we will grade the project. THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK: Practicing phonograms and Xtramath is a given but there will be no spelling words, poetry, or math workbook pages this week. I do encourage reading as well. There is project week science homework in the form of a packet. Here is how it will work: 1. Scholars will work on an aspect of the packet in the classroom. 2. Scholars will bring the packet home in their homework folder. 3. Scholars will work on the Tuesday homework page of the packet and place it back into the red folder. 4. On Wednesday and Thursday the process will repeat. It is very important that the science homework is completed each night and it must be returned the next day as we will be working on it in class too. GLUE STICKS! GLUE STICKS! My crafty class has used many glue sticks. We passed the last of them out today. If you are able to donate packages of glue sticks to the classroom it would be very much appreciated. :-) GENERAL ACADEMICS: Spalding - Phonogram and handwriting review. Students will review past words in class, but there are no new spelling words or spelling homework this week. Math - Graphs *A "Friendly Notes" information page will be sent home in the red homework folders tomorrow. Science - Human Body Systems UPCOMING DATES: Wednesday, January 12 - K-5 Project Night, 6 PM Students arrive at 5:45 PM in uniform *More information about the 1st grade projects are being sent home tomorrow. ON A PERSONAL NOTE: This morning every scholar had the opportunity to share something they did over break. It was fun to hear about their adventures. I enjoyed a wonderful time with family, got to spend a lot of time with my son, and I got to go dancing at the Arthur Murray in Goodyear. My craft closet is nice and organized and I know exactly what projects I am going to make over the next several months. Break was so enjoyable! NAME THE GOOD: - Evals take more than a bit of time to write. (It's a good thing I enjoy writing.) I have 19 finished. Yay! - It was so nice to see my students this morning!!! Happy 2022! |
