Hello parents! First of all I wanted to thank everyone for coming to conferences. I enjoyed meeting with each of you. I love my class and it would have been so easy for me to talk about each one of the children long beyond the 15 minute time allotment. I would also like to say thank you to all of you who were able to take part in our Owl at Home literacy celebration. I had to laugh at the end of the day because so many of the scholars still had marshmallow fluff stuck to their face.
Math: This week we are continuing to work on adding numbers within 20. One very important concept we are honing in on is making sure the scholars know how to make a ten. Practice making ten. Use some sort of manipulative and give them a number have them tell you how many more do they need to make ten. Be on the look out for an addition within 20 information sheet that will go home in your child's red folder on Tuesday. Later this week we will be moving into subtraction within 20. Continue to practice basic math facts. If they are automatic, this will help them quickly add or subtract the more complex problems. Homework: Mon: WB 110 Tues: WB 114 Wed: WB 117 addition and subtraction flash cards Thur: 118-119 The homework pages are also listed on the homework log. Please do you not skip ahead. Each lesson builds on the lesson before so skipping ahead will often result in confusion for some scholars. Reading/Literature: We are in full swing with reading groups. Within the next two weeks, I will begin asking for parent volunteers to help during reading time. Keep your eye out for a signup genius link to You must be fingerprint cleared and have gone through processing with the office to volunteer. If you are not sure if your information has been processed check with the office staff. Last week we began reading the Frog and Toad series. SEND IN YOUR BUTTONS: We have an activity planned for next week where our scholars will need buttons. If you have a collection, some extras lying around, or you are willing to donate a package from the craft store please send them in. Spalding/Spelling Words: We will finish learning the rest of our phonograms this week. Students should be practicing 1-70 by Wednesday this week. One of the most effective ways that I have found is to focus on 15 - 20 for the whole. Week. Include 10 that are still challenging and 5-10 that your child has mastered. The next week switch out some of the ones that have been mastered with newly mastered ones. You can also have your child write the phonograms instead of saying them. Science: This week we will be studying physics - the study of motion. Today we talked about the definition of force (a push or pull causing motion). Students had an opportunity to practice using a small amount of force vs. a large amount of force by pushing their pencils off their desks. This was an activity that they got into with an incredible about of enthusiasm. :-) Upcoming events: October 28th - Picture Retake Day November 11th - No school Have a wonderful week! Mrs. Spencer Hello and welcome back to the 2nd quarter of the 2016 - 2017 school year!
Upcoming events:
There will be no lunch this week, however you may send a healthy snack for your child to eat during recess. If you have not signed up for conferences, I encourage you to do so. The sign up link is: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e084cafaf22aafa7-october Readers will continue to be sent home this week. Below is some important information to keep in mind as we continue this process. Please let me know if you have any questions. ***Scholars have been placed in leveled groups. Please keep in mind that we have many scholars that are reading at different levels. In order to create groups that are able to receive small group instruction the level your child is receiving is either right on, a level above, or a level below what they received on their benchmark assessment. Some key things to keep in mind as you work with your child are the many different elements of reading and reading comprehension. We are focusing on skills such as fluency and accuracy. This means students are probably only sounding out one or two words per page during their first read of the book. We are also looking at the speed or pace in which the student is reading. Is the pace too slow or too fast? We are also looking for an understanding of the key details of the story and a knowledge of new vocabulary. Although a book may seem easy to a student we want them to build confidence in their reading so there should not be too many words they do not know. If a book is too hard students will become frustrated and discouraged. Our goal is to make them feel accomplished when reading their books. If a student is reading with ease this is fine. There are other skills they are building when reading a book without mistakes. They can work on the pace in which they read and develop a better understanding of the details of the story. Scholars will keep their same book all week. Work with them everyday on their book and they will be reading and discussing these books during reading groups. The books go home in a gallon size zip lock baggie and will need to come back to school the next day. Please help your scholar to remember to bring it back everyday so that we may use it class. We will begin change out readers almost every week. Frog and Toad: This week we will begin a new literature focus on Frog and Toad are Friends from the Frog and Toad series collection by Arnold Lobel. We will be reading from these books daily so if you have not sent the Frog and Told collection to school with your child, please do so no later than Tuesday. Math: We will be starting our week off looking at numbers through 20. Many children know how to count to twenty, but we will begin studying the numbers closely -learning about tens and ones and using that knowledge to compare the numbers. Be on the look out for a "Numbers through 20" information sheet. This information sheet is for you to keep at home as a reference. This week we will also be learning more advanced addition. Knowledge of the basic addition and subtraction math facts through 10 will help with this new skill immensely. We will be doing a fun activity to introduce addition with larger numbers and are in need of egg cartons. If you have any extra egg cartons, please send them to school with your child by Wednesday. Thank you so much for all you do. Have a wonderful week! Mrs. Spencer Dear Parents,
As we begin our final week of the 1st quarter I want to say thank you for everything you do to support your children as they continue to grow as scholars. They push themselves to work hard every day and every day I can see how much they have matured and developed since the beginning of the school year. Some days flow easily. Other days we must practice again and again to be sure we are walking in straight lines, sitting like scholars, raising our hands to speak, and treating others the way we would want to be treated. The practice sometimes feels uncomfortable after many repetitions but the end result is strength and stamina. This is a beautiful picture of what it is like to be a first grader as we develop a sense of the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty in all we do. We are building the foundation in first grade. As teachers, Mrs. Scott and I also push ourselves to find every way possible to help the scholars in our class develop a strong sense of citizenship and confidence. Thank you so much as we work together to help these beautiful children grow. Sincerely, Mrs. Spencer UPCOMING EVENTS: Thursday, October 6th - Last day of the 1st quarter. This is a full day of classes. Friday, October 7th - No school Monday, October 10th- Friday, October 14th - Fall break Monday, October 17th - Friday, October 21st - Half day schedule. Students will be dismissed at noon. There will be no lunch on those days. Please pack a HEALThY snack for your child to eat during recess. MATH: This week we will be taking a break from addition and subtraction and focus on ordinal numbers instead. On Tuesday I will be sending home an parent information page about ordinal numbers. Please keep this at home to use as a reference. This is a very short chapter so the chapter test will be this Thursday. We will spend the entire math block on Wednesday and part of the math block on Thursday to review for the test. Even though our primary focus is not on addition and subtraction, I ask that you continue to practice the basic math facts with your child. I have found the following website very helpful and easy to create math flashcards: http://www.aplusmath.com/Flashcards/FlashcardCreator.html If you find that your child has reached a point of being able to fly through the basic math facts easily you can change it up to make it more of challenge. For example, instead of showing this fact: 3+2=__ you can show it this way: 3 + __ = 5 You can do the same thing with subtraction. For example, instead of showing the fact 10-7=__ you can show it this way: 10- __ = 3 PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: If you have not already signed up for parent/teacher conferences, please do so. Here is the Sign Up Genius link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e084cafaf22aafa7-october LEVELED READERS: Starting this week, all scholars will be bringing home a leveled reader book each night. The reader is in a ziplock bag that has your child's name. We will be using the books every day so please make sure your child places the book back inside the baggie and brings it to school every day. Each child will receive a new reader at the beginning of each week. Have a great week! |
