Wow! It is the end of the 1st quarter already. Some weeks felt really slow. Some weeks felt really fast. Every year I am surprised when the end of the quarter is suddenly here.
EVALUATIONS: In the Great Hearts district teachers are asked to write very extensive evaluations for each student for the first quarter. Please take the time read those evaluations that will be attached to the report cards at the end of fall break. Some teachers are more eloquent with their words than others. Some write longer paragraphs, some write shorter. No matter the length or the eloquence of words, know that there is many many many hours of work and love that goes into each one of them. :-) CONFERENCES: Parent / Teacher conferences take place Monday October 14th - Wednesday October 16th. I have so much respect for those teachers who teach the upper grades (middle school and prep levels.) That is a special calling. I don't think I could ever teach that level because I would miss the younger scholars! I would miss the hundreds of pictures that students draw for me and pile on my desk and I would miss that light that is in the each scholars eyes each day. My class is so excited about learning and so excited about what they are doing each day!

The Harp and Laurel Wreath contains many of the poems that the the students recite. This past Friday I handed out their copies of the Harp and Laurel Wreath and let my class explore. They recognized many of the poems they recited in Kindergarten and found the ones we have looked at in first grade so far. The students were enthralled with the books for several minutes. Many were excited to discover that a lot of the harder poems contained the phonograms they have been learning in Spalding. I loved how excited they were about the book and the beautiful poetry printed on the pages!

I often get asked the question, "Why do you teach?" That is not a quick answer because there are a lot of reasons why I teach. The short answer is, "Because I like teaching." Then I get asked, "Why do you like teaching?" Once in awhile I will share specific reasons I like teaching. Today is one of those times. On Friday, one of my students, who has barely spoken, answered a question in a loud clear, confident voice! Today, one of my students who had been struggling with understanding something suddenly brightened like the sun, said, "Ohhh!" Then turned to her neighbor and explained the concept perfectly! Today one of my students came up to me and said, "I like school! Thank you for teaching me!" ALL of those reasons plus hundreds more are why I like teaching!
