Hello to all. Last week we began reading and discussing some of Aesop's fables. Instead of immediately telling the students the moral of the story, they have discussions within their groups to figure out the moral. It is fascinating to hear what they come up with. For example for the fable "The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" they said the moral was, "Don't be a fake. People will find out." So far, every moral they come up with is 100 percent accurate.
During all discussions, we work on the the skill of "tracking the speaker." All hands go down and we turn toward the speaker to listen to what he/she has to say. CURRICULUM NIGHT: Curriculum night is this Thursday, August 23nd from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. This is a parents only event. Curriculum night is not an open house. Headmaster Washburn will be presenting information at 6:00. After her presentation, parents will be able to go to their child's classroom where the teachers have planned interactive mini lessons. We will present the lesson in a similar manner as we would during the school day. After the mini lesson night, we will present some general information about the first grade curriculum and we, hopefully, we will have time to answer some general questions. If you have specific questions, particularly ones about how your child is doing, please e-mail me and we can schedule a separate time to address them. Since curriculum night is not set up as an open house you may find it difficult to pop in and out of different classrooms if you have more than one child at the school. A couple of suggestions based on what parents have done in the past is: 1. Choose the classroom / grade level that you feel would be most beneficial for you to visit. 2. A spouse or other family member can visit one classroom while you visit another. READING BLOCK (DAILY 3) During our reading block we have been working hard learning foundations lessons to become an independent reader. One of those lessons include: "Three Ways to Read a Book." Those 3 ways are: 1. Read the pictures. (Go through the book and tell the story based on what pictures you see.) 2. Read the words. 3. Retell the story (Going back and retelling the story using both the words and the pictures as a guide.) These three different ways allow struggling readers to feel successful and allows all readers to explore a book with more depth. MATH: This week we will begin Unit 2 - Number bonds which includes identifying the whole and that parts of a problem. LITERATURE: "Different Lands, Similar Stories" GRAMMAR: Common Nouns and Proper Nouns SPALDING: We are starting spelling words this week. Students will learn 5 new words on Tuesday and 5 news words on Wednesday. Thursday is our review day and the spelling test will be on Friday. HISTORY: We are finishing up our introduction to maps. A study guide will be sent home in the students' red homework folders on Tuesday. The test will be on Thursday. LUNCHES: Please note that students do eat lunch on Wednesdays. The only time students do not eat lunch are on half days when students are dismissed at noon. UPCOMING EVENTS: Monday, August 20 - PSO Family Night at Peter Piper Pizza, 4-8 PM Thursday, August 23 - K-5 Curriculum Night, 6-7 PM *This event is for parents only* Monday, September 3 -No School: Labor Day Friday, September 14 - School Picture Day Please read The Athenian Echo for more details about the events. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to have at least a brief conversation with most of the parents who visited on Thursday night. If you would like to meet and visit about your child in an atmosphere that is less busy than an open house please e-mail me through Jupiter and we can set up a conference.
My blog will be updated on a weekly basis - usually no later than Monday evening. Most blog posts will be fairly brief. The posts will be longer during the first week or two due to the large volume of information. The blog page as well as The Athenian Echo are excellent pages to read about general information for class and school. SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND CONSUMABLE BOOKS During the last few of days Ms. Ramirez have spent several hours going through and checking off school supplies. If anything is missing a note will be sent home with a check mark next to those items that are still needed. Those parents who let me know that they were waiting for supplies to come in will also receive those notes as it is one of the ways we keep track of who we have contacted. The books we will need immediately include: Aesop's Fables Singapore Math workbook 1A Pink Spalding notebook Mead Primary Writing Tablet THIS WEEK It will be completely normal for your child to feel a mixture of nervousness and excitement throughout the week. Going from kindergarten to first grade is a huge step and they will probably be tired by the end of the day. This week our main focus will be learning and practicing grade level and classroom procedures and expectations. One of the school expectations that we will be going over will be the school dress code. Please review the dress code examples using the following link: Dress Code Examples: http://archwaytriviumeast.greatheartsacademies.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2018/07/Archway-Trivium-East-Uniform-Examples-2018-19.pdf AFTER SCHOOL PICK UP PROCEDURE Below is a link to the pick-up and drop-off procedures. (As with all of the links on this page, you will probably have to cut and paste it into the browser bar.) Please direct any questions about the procedures to the front office. The pick-up procedure will take longer during the first weeks of school so your patience is appreciated. Drop off and pick-up: http://archwaytriviumeast.greatheartsacademies.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2018/07/ATE-2018-19-drop-off-and-pick-up-maps.pdf UPCOMING DATES: Tuesday, August 7 - First Day of School, 7:50 AM - 3:10 PM Wednesday, August 8 -First Early-Release Wednesday, 7:50 AM - 1:15 PM *Note: Every Wednesday is an early dismissal at 1:15 PM* Friday, August 17 -Half Day Dismissal, 12:00 PM * Trivium Spirit Day * Monday, August 20 -PSO Family Night at Peter Piper Pizza, 4-8 PM Tuesday, August 21 -Volunteer Fingerprinting, 8-10 AM Thursday, August 23 -K-5 Curriculum Night, 6-7 PM *This event is for parents only* I hope I was able to address many of the most common questions that come up during the first few days of school.
